Gear Shifting

The engine is screaming, the speedometer winding down while the tach redlines. The entire car shakes and vibrates, hitting limits, the wheel lurches. I’ve gone from cruising at high speed, shifting into lower gear to slow the drive without touching the brakes and she’s fighting every second of it until she finally slows and I take the corner easy. This is the closest analogy I have to the change. To how I have to slow myself down when I’m leaving them. Choke it down, brake the engine, and then let the whole thing adjust as it will to the change until it’s controlled again. I know they want me to talk, to be here. They want me to shine for them. I can’t. Everything in me is pushing me back, still going too fast, still running too hot. The weekend is still burning too brightly. *** “Is Jewel here? Is Jewel here?” He’s come to pick me up, and from the first second he walked in everything spun back into high gear.  Touching, kissing, breathing him in. It’s never enough. Even wh...

The First

It’s 1986ish. I’m a child and my older siblings have been picking on me. I have a point to make a point to prove, one that would validate me. I want to say it, but my mother is asking me “Is it better to be right or to be kind?” The fight goes out of me. Everything in my little life has ingrained in me that kindness matters above all. I never say my point. This guides me for the first 25 years of my life, a lesson in biting it all down. It’s 1999. I graduate high school in a month or less. I’m sitting in the guidance counselor’s room and she’s looking at me while I sob uncontrollably and explain the the boy I was supposed to marry has broken up with me. The house, the cars, the kids, our idyllic life gone into the arms of another girl. She calls Rob to the office. Conflict resolution, my first real taste of it as a grown up. I knock the sobbing down to sniffs when he sits next to me feeling foreign. I don’t know him now. He says he never cared about me, I was just a game to win. I wa...

2018 Year In Review

I used to write these instead of New Year resolutions since a recap was better for starting with a vow I’ll break in a month or less. So, I suppose without any further ado, my 2018 review. January It started out pretty par for the course. I met a guy named Mike and Matt had been dating a woman named Chasity. Things were going alright, pretty lukewarm in the poly department. I finished training in my job and my truck was still bright and shined new. We saw a Southern ice storm that had us locked in our house for the first few days of the year, but things warmed up fairly quickly again. My big focus was getting a couple of fire departments online and briefed on social media, but for the most part it was pretty sedentary and we were adjusting to our new life. We  had two red-tail hawks, birds I often associate with my brother, land on the back fence of my yard one afternoon. I took that to be a happy omen of things to come. A blessing, as it were. February Things with Mike f...
